Checkmates

Notes for Editors

Jon Lloyd a chess tutor working for Chess in Schools and Community https://www.chessinschools.co.uk which is a SME charity delivering chess to schools across the UK. He teaches at two local schools – Gordon’s School in Woking and Kennel Lane SEN School in Bracknell.

Jon adapted the 30 week curriculum for teaching chess to children to a 10 week program for adults. Mostly he has taught adults over the age of 50, but he has also taught parents/guardians and children and people living with or affected by cancer with sponsorship from Macmillan.

A program for teaching chess to over – 50 year olds was run through Bracknell Forest Council Public Health Department (BFC) in 2017 under the brand name ‘Checkmates’ and paid for by a lottery grant. Checkmates proved to be very successful so was extended in 2018 with a grant from Bracknell Forest Council.

Jon has also taught chess at the Grange in Southcote through Age UK Reading. To date he has taught over 130 people over the age of 50 how to play or improve chess in the Berkshire region. This program is now being extended to West Berkshire in September 2018 and thereafter to other regions of the country.

Jon runs two library clubs to support the program. Adult chess clubs support this initiative and are run from Crowthorne library [every Thursday 4 – 5pm] and Bracknell library [1.30 – 3.30 pm every Friday].

Teaching chess to over – 50 year olds has been highly beneficial for socialising and developing thinking skills – see a video link at https://www.chessinschools.co.uk/older-people for further information or contact Jon at jonll58@btinternet.com.
