Heading to University This Autumn? Don’t Miss Your Free MenB Vaccination 

Starting university is an exciting time, with opportunities to meet new people, make friends and enjoy new experiences. However, close social contact and shared living spaces can increase the risk of infections spreading, including meningococcal disease. 

Meningococcal group B (MenB) disease is a rare but serious bacterial infection that can cause meningitis (inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord) and septicaemia (blood poisoning). It can develop quickly and, in some cases, be life-threatening. 

To help protect young people at increased risk, the NHS is offering a one-off MenB vaccination to first-time university entrants aged up to 25 years who have not previously received the vaccine. This is particularly important for students moving into halls of residence or other shared accommodation. To be fully vaccinated, you need two doses not less than 28 days apart.
